Unexcused Absences and Lates, School Policies

In recent weeks we have noticed an increase in student unexcused absences and lates to class. To maintain a safe, respectful and a caring school environment we have adjusted some of our policies and procedures to help support students in their attendance in classes and to limit disruptions to learning around the school. When students miss class time due to lates and absences it has a negative impact on their grades and ability to find success in their courses. Students who are late to class also disrupt the learning environment at times when arriving to class and in hallways where classrooms have begun instruction. Over the past weeks we have seen an increase in students showing up for class 20-30 minutes after the class has started.

Moving Forward:

  • Students who are more than 10 minutes late for class will not be permitted to enter the classroom. Students will be marked absent for the period.
  • Should students be late or absent for school or a class, parents need to call in the late to the main office so it is recorded as excused prior to the class. Students will then be permitted to enter class after the 10-minute cut off.
  • Any students who are not in a classroom must be in the learning commons or outside of the school. Students are not permitted to be loitering in hallways during class time.
  • Students who are late for multiple classes and have multiple unexcused absences may be sent home for the day to minimize disruption to learning environments in the school.

Our CBE Student Code of Conduct and CBE Progressive Student Discipline regulation apply to all of our students. They outline the roles and expectations for our students to promote positive and inclusive learning environments, help students to develop empathy and become good citizens both within and outside of the school community, and explain the consequences when a student’s disruptive behaviour negatively affects the learning environment. We would encourage parents to review these regulations with their student. Please use the link below to access the regulations on our website.

Unexcused Absences and Bathroom Passes

At Forest Lawn, we believe there is a strong positive correlation between attendance and success in learning. Our staff is here to support students with regular attendance, creating the conditions that help students engage with learning. Responses to student absences take into consideration each student’s context and individual needs, consistent with the continuum of supports and services provided for students.

Each Classroom has 2 bathroom passes which student must use to go to their locker, use the bathroom or be in the hallway.

  • Bathroom passes and late slips must be visible while in the bathrooms or hallways.
  • Students should always have their student ID on there person.
  • We ask that students use the bathroom pass in a timely manor to be respectful of other students in the class who may need to use it.
  • Administration or any staff may ask to see as student’s bathroom pass, ID or late slip at any time.
  • Should a student not have a bathroom pass or late slip they will be asked to meet with administration in which our progressive student discipline policies will be used.
  • Students may be suspended for truancy or disrupting the proceeding of the school in accordance with our Student Code of Conduct and Progressive Student Discipline regulations.

Mobile Devices

Personal Mobile Devices will continue to be monitored in each of the students’ classrooms by each of their teachers.

Students are not allowed at any time to use their personal mobile devices in a bathroom or in the hallway during instructional time. Should a staff member see a student using a personal mobile device in the hallway during instructional time or in the bathroom, the device will be confiscated immediately and returned at the end of the day.

Vaping and Smoking

Forest Lawn High School is non-smoking and non-vaping facility which includes the outside property surrounding the school. Students who choose to vape or smoke must do so off of school property. Students who are caught vaping or smoking inside or on school property may be suspended in accordance with our Student Code of Conduct and Progressive Student Discipline regulations. Items which cannot be purchased by a minor will be confiscated. Student may also receive a ticket from our School Resource Officer if caught inside or near the doors of the school using a vape device or smoking.

Students on a SPARE

All students who have a SPARE are required to be in the Learning Commons (Library) if they choose to be inside the school. Any student who are on a SPARE may not meet in the hallways of the school during their SPARE. The Learning Commons (Library) has bathroom passes for students on SPARE to use in the same way as the expectations listed above.

Should you have any questions or concerns regarding the any of the expectations and policies please contact the main office to speak to an administrator.

Thank you to all of our amazing students in making Forest Lawn an amazing place of learning and growth. These policies and expectation have been implemented to support students in their attendance while at school and limit the disruptions to the learning environment of our school for all of our students and staff.
