Semester 2 Start Up
Wednesday January 31 is the first day of semester 2 classes. It will be a regular day of classes on Wednesday. Students who have “See Counsellor” in one of their periods on their schedule are to report to the guidance office during this period to complete their timetable with their counsellor.
A reminder for students on SPARES, students are required to be in the Learning Commons (Library) if they choose to be inside the school. Any student who are on a SPARE may not meet in the hallways of the school during their SPARE. The Learning Commons (Library) has hall passes for students on SPARE to use in the same way as the expectations for all classrooms.
Course Challenges
Dear Students and Families,
This message intends to inform families of CBE's International Languages Course Challenge process and its associated important dates.
The International Languages Course Challenge allows students who have taken immersion or bilingual programs in K-9 or are fluent in a language to earn school credit by challenging the 30 level language course. If successful, students would receive a final grade for the 30 level and passing credits for the 10 and 20 level.
Languages Course Challenges offered this year include:
Arabic 35
Cantonese 35
French 30 - 9Y
French 30 - 3Y
German 30
Italian 30 (in collaboration with CCSD - students write at St Mary's HS)
Japanese 30 (in collaboration with CCSD - students write at St Mary's HS)
Mandarin 30
Filipino 35 (in collaboration with CCSD- students write at St Mary's HS)
Punjabi 30
Spanish 30
Ukrainian 30
Students interested in challenging a language course are asked to review the process and dates outlined in CBE's Course Challenge Guide for Students and Families.
Students wanting to participate in the Winter Course Challenge must complete and submit the Language Course Challenge Consent Form (page 15) to their School Counsellor by February 8. The language challenge process will be offered again in the Fall and Winter of 2024-2025 school year.
Because this process requires students to prepare for the exam independently, the challenge process may not be the best path for those looking to have a strong language 30 mark. Students wanting to challenge French 30 may want to enroll in the course at Forest Lawn HS to strengthen their skills and have the support of our language teacher. Students who follow this route will also receive a final grade for the 30 level and passing credits for the 10 and 20 level.
Please reach out to your School Counsellor if you have any questions.
