Learning Commons

Many of our parent council members, sons and daughters, have now graduated from Forest Lawn. This has left some vacancies on our parent council this year. We look forward to meeting new parents and the additions of new members this year. Please join us on Tuesday September 23 to learn more about how you can become a member of our parent council and contribute to our school culture.

Fall Language Challenge 2025-26

Registrations are open for students in grades 10, 11 and 12 to challenge a 30-level language course through a centralized language challenge process. Languages offered are: Arabic 35, French 30-3Y, French 30-9Y, Cantonese 35, German 30, Japanese 30, Mandarin 30, Punjabi 30, Spanish 30, Ukrainian 30, Filipino 35 and Italian 30.

Students interested in challenging a language exam for Fall 2025 must return signed consent forms to their counsellor by Wednesday October 1. These forms can be found in the Course Challenge Guide for Students and Family.

Guidance Department Updates

We hope the school year is off to a positive start and that everyone is settling into routines. As always, our Guidance Department is here to support students in their academic journey, post-secondary planning, and overall well-being. Below are a few important updates and reminders for this month.

Timetable Changes Now Closed

As we are now three weeks into the semester, timetable changes are no longer being made. At this point in the term, it is not in the best interest of students to move classes, as instructional time has already been missed. In addition, due to the high volume of requests earlier in the month, most classes are now at full capacity and cannot accommodate further changes.

We would like to sincerely thank all students who followed the course change process. Your cooperation allowed our guidance team to work through requests in a fair and efficient way.

Grade 12 Graduation Requirements and Expectations

We encourage all families of Grade 12 students to have conversations with their student about their current credit count and progress toward graduation. This is an important time to ensure that all requirements are on track.

As a general guideline, a Grade 12 student is considered on track or in good standing if they have at least 80 credits at the start of Grade 12. This helps ensure that diploma requirements can reasonably be met by the end of the school year.

Alberta High School Diploma Requirements
To earn a diploma, students must complete a minimum of 100 credits, which include the following:

  • English Language Arts 30-1 or 30-2
  • Social Studies 30-1 or 30-2
  • Mathematics 20-1, 20-2, or 20-3
  • Science 20, 24, Biology 20, Chemistry 20, or Physics 20
  • Physical Education 10 (3 credits)
  • Career and Life Management (CALM, 3 credits)
  • 10 credits in any combination of Career and Technology Studies (CTS), Fine Arts, Second Languages, or PE 20/30
  • 10 credits in any 30-level courses (in addition to English and Social Studies 30-level courses)

Our guidance counselors will be reviewing progress with each Grade 12 student over the coming weeks. The initial graduation list will be posted next month so that students and families are aware of their status.

MyPass Account — Required for All Grade 12 Students

All Grade 12 students are required to have an Alberta Education MyPass account. This account is used to:

  • View and print diploma exam results and progress toward graduation
  • Order transcripts for post-secondary or employment
  • Access official records and course history

How to set up a MyPass account:

  1. Go to mypass.alberta.ca.
  2. Click Sign Up.
  3. Use a personal (non-CBE) email address — this is very important, as school email accounts will not remain active after graduation. You must ensure that we have added your personal email to your powerschool account.  The Guidance Secretary, Ms Tammy, can support you with this.
  4. Follow the instructions to activate the account.

Students who need help setting up their MyPass account are encouraged to visit the Guidance Office. Counselors are happy to walk students through the process during lunch hours or spare periods.

Forest Lawn High School Graduation Ceremony Policy

To participate in the graduation ceremony on June 5, 2026, Grade 12 students must:

  • Meet all Alberta Diploma requirements by the end of June, OR
  • Be within 5 credits of the 100-credit requirement, OR
  • Be missing only one required course, with a clear plan to complete it by August 2026.

We encourage parents and guardians to have open conversations with their student and to reach out to our guidance team at any time for support or clarification.

Reminder - Online Forms

Each year, schools have a variety of forms that parents / legal guardians / independent students are required to complete or review and update, some of which are paper and others online. For families who have not yet completed these annual forms, please submit the Demographic Verification and Annual Authorization forms in School Engage for your child as soon as possible. These forms are required every year for Alberta Education to confirm student funding. We recognize certain families have already completed Demographic Verification and Annual Authorization forms for their children for the 2025-26 school year and we thank you for taking time to submit them.

Details of the online forms found in School Engage include:

  • Demographic Verification - 2025-26 – This required form is an Alberta Education requirement as proof of Registration for funding purposes and includes your child’s personal information as well as parent / legal guardian contact information.
  • Citizenship Information Update - 2025-26 – This form becomes available if you change your child’s citizenship information on the Demographic Verification form.
  • Annual Authorization - 2025-26 – Combines the following forms:
    • School District Use of Personal Information - explains how CBE uses personal information in providing education services.
    • Consent for CBE Use of Student Information – provides an option to grant / not grant consent for additional use of student information by school/district and third parties.
    • Consent for Use of Student Information by News Media and Outside Groups (Third Party) - provides an option to grant / not grant consent for additional use of student information by outside groups and third parties

School Engage is one of the applications found in your MyCBE account. This is the same account that you use to pay fees, view academic information, book school conferences, register to volunteer etc.

If you do not have a MyCBE account, on the MyCBE page click on Create a MyCBE Account. For online help, refer to MyCBE - Creating an Account (includes instructions and a video).

To complete these forms:

  1. sign in to your MyCBE account
  2. click on the School Engage icon
  3. select the form
  4. complete or review and update the form
  5. click on Submit to send the form electronically to the school
